September 2010 Running Report

Last Update 16th September 2010

Sunday 5th September saw the annual clash of titans which is the Club Cycle/Run event.

13 athletes arrived at the Queens Head in Lower Layham to join the fray including some beginners, some old hands, a member of the Youth Group and even one of our younger athletes from the Junior Section. To make the race as fair as possible, teams were drawn at random, the rule being that the team time could not count until both members made it to the finish – sticking together was therefore the name of the game.

Part one of the race was a 5km bike ride along the Layham straight, up the hill by the Rugby Club, back along the top road, returning to the Queens Head for what our Triathlete members would call “T1” – the all important transition from bike to running. By this time the field was becoming spread out with the faster bikers taking the lead. The running section, again 5km, took a different route out to Shelley, then right up the infamous climb, before taking a right and coming back round to the pub for the second crucial transition. At this stage, many of the faster cyclists had been caught and overtaken by the faster runners – it was never a lonely experience on the way round! The final 10km cycle took the field out via Polstead Heath and then back again to base camp for a well deserved drink and the chance of a Sunday Roast.

Honours on the day went to Trudy Avis and Steve Cox who raced away from the field from the off only to reappear at the end having completed the course in 1:00:09! All those who took part had a great time at what was, after all, a fun, social event.

Thanks to Amanda and Lorraine who selflessly waited at the pub doing organising and timekeeping duties, and thanks to all who turned up, making this one of the great reasons to join in!
